Scarf & blanket size calculator

Plan stitches and rows together for a simple flat scarf or blanket, respecting repeats in each direction.

Your measurements

Use a decimal point: 2.5, not 2,5.

Changing a unit reinterprets the numbers; it does not convert existing entries. All length fields use the selected unit. Gauge span: enter 4 for 4 inches, or 10 for 10 cm.

How to use this calculator

  1. Swatch the intended fabric and enter both stitch and row gauge.
  2. Choose the target width and length, using the selected unit for every length field.
  3. Enter stitch and row repeats plus fixed extras. Review the resulting dimensions rather than assuming the target is exact.

Can I resize a scarf or blanket with the same stitch pattern?

For a flat rectangle with a representative uniform gauge, choose the width and length and calculate each axis separately. This planner keeps full repeats; it does not proportionally scale garment shaping, different-gauge borders or yarn requirements.

Use your chosen rectangle dimensions and a weighed swatch to estimate yarn, not stitch count alone. Swatch yarn estimator →

The calculation

Calculate valid stitch and row totals independently from width × stitch density and length × row density. Choose the nearest valid total for each axis.

A worked example

A 50 × 70 cm rectangle at 20 stitches and 28 rows per 10 cm, with 6 + 2 stitch repeats and 8-row repeats, selects 98 stitches × 192 rows: about 49 × 68.57 cm.

Before you cast on

One gauge for the entire rectangle assumes the border and centre have comparable density. Separate borders, cables, lace and bias fabric may need their own samples. This is not a garment pattern.

Measure a representative, washed and dried swatch without stretching it. See method sources and measurement guidance.

Display values round to 2 decimals; calculations keep full precision. Counts are whole numbers. No calculator can promise fabric behaviour.
